Rhode Island Transvaginal Mesh Injury Attorneys

If you recently delivered a child or had surgery where transvaginal surgical mesh was used, take note: In the three-year period from 2005 to 2008, the FDA received more than 1,000 reports of serious adverse complications from this medical product.

The serious adverse complications reported to the FDA include continued pain, dangerous infections and other significant health problems that result in a considerable decrease in person’s quality of life, or even death. Patients who experience these side effects may need additional surgeries, IV therapies, blood transfusions and other invasive medical procedures to restore their qualities of life or, in some cases, to save their lives.

If you or a loved one has suffered from the serious side effects of transvaginal mesh, you should contact the experienced medical product defect attorneys of Gemma Law Associates in Providence, Rhode Island. What is transvaginal mesh?

Transvaginal mesh is a product that is inserted during surgery to repair pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence. The mesh is stretched across the vaginal wall, providing support to tissues that may have been damaged during childbirth or surgery.

FDA Actions Regarding Transvaginal Mesh

In October 2008, the FDA issued a Public Health Notification to healthcare practitioners explaining the serious, sometimes life-threatening complications of transvaginal mesh that had been reported to the agency. Healthcare practitioners were urged to obtain specialized training before using transvaginal mesh, be alert to potential complications, and to adequately warn patients about the risks.

Who is at Risk of Complications from Transvaginal Mesh?

Anyone who has transvaginal mesh placement is at risk of developing serious side effects. The risk is increased for women who are of poor health prior to the insertion of the transvaginal mesh. The risk can also be increased by certain mesh materials, the size and shape of the mesh, the surgical technique used and whether other surgical procedures (such as a hysterectomy) were performed at the time that the mesh was inserted.
